LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team completed a conference-opening sweep of San Francisco State with two victories on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles collected 22 hits and 22 runs and swept past San Francisco State, 10-5, 12-5 at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (10-4, 4-0 CCAA) came into the series stuck in a three-game losing streak, but the Golden Eagles improved their home record to 8-0.
Matt Miraldi had the big bat in the opener, belting two home runs and driving in five runs. He led the game off for the Golden Eagles with a home run to give Cal State L.A. a 1-0 lead and then hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning that broke open a tight game.
Toby Davis added a towering solo home run in the eighth inning. The other big hit in the game was a big three-run double by
Mario Ramirez in the second inning that broke a 1-1 tie.
Brian Dearth worked five strong innings to pick up the win for the Golden Eagles, while
John Dunn worked the final four innings for his third save. Dearth allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out five and not walking anyone. Dunn gave up six hits and one run over the final four innings.
Patrick Haugen pitched well for the Gators (4-5, 0-3) until tiring in the fifth inning. He departed after allowing the grand slam home run to Miraldi. Bobby Carini had three hits and two runs scored and Ryan Williams had three hits and drove in three runs for San Francisco State.
The Gators had tied the game at 4-4 with a single run in the fifth, but
Max Moya singled in
Travis Tartamella to give the Golden Eagles the lead and Miraldi delivered his grand slam later in the inning.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles got a great start from
Yuichiro Fujiwara, who limited the Gators to five hits and two runs over five innings to pick up the win.
Devon Ramirez allowed two runs in one inning of relief and
Travis McBride allowed a run while finishing up in the seventh.
Miraldi had two more hits and two more RBI in the contest, while Davis had a pair of two-run doubles.
San Francisco State got home runs from Keith Garcia and Zack Anderson and had seven hits in the game.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open with a seven-run uprising in the second inning. McBride had a sacrifice fly, Miraldi had a two-run single,
Mario Ramirez singled in a run and Davis doubled in a pair to highlight the inning.
Cal State L.A. tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning to increase its advantage to 11-1. Ramirez had an RBI grounder and Davis had another two-run double.
The Golden Eagles will return to action with a non-conference game against Cal Baptist at Reeder Field beginning at 2 p.m.
