Golden Eagles Sweep Gators To Open CCAA Play

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule off to a good start.
 
The Golden Eagles collected a total of 29 hits and posted 9-4 and 12-6 wins over San Francisco State in a doubleheader Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (8-4, 2-0 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win in the opener.
 
Cal State L.A. got strong pitching performances from its top two starters. Isaac Morales won his second game of the season and 21st of his Cal State L.A. career in the opener after tossing seven innings and giving up five hits and two runs. John Mitchell then overcame some shaky defense to go five solid innings and allowing three earned runs. Mitchell is now 3-0 on the season.
 
Danne Quiroz had a huge day at the plate for the Golden Eagles, going 6-for-10 with two runs scored and five RBI. He hit a three-run home run in the nightcap to help the Golden Eagles erase an early 6-2 deficit.
 
Matt Miraldi had three hits and three RBI in the opener, while Toby Davis hit a two-run home run in the nightcap and scored twice. Mario Ramirez was 4-for-4 in the nightcap.
 
San Francisco State (4-4, 0-2 CCAA) got a strong start in the opener from Spencer Kreisberg, who allowed only three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.
 
The Golden Eagles staked Morales to a quick 2-0 lead in the opener when Travis Tartamella delivered a two-run single to score Miraldi and Jesus Campos.
 
The Gators got one back in the second when Ryan Williams doubled off the right-field wall and came around to score on a wild pitch. Cal State L.A. upped its lead to 3-1 in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout by Campos, but San Francisco State made it 3-2 in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by Patrick Haugen.
 
Cal State L.A. got another run in the sixth when Miraldi's infield hit scored Chris Matzner and the Golden Eagles finally got some breathing room with a four-run seventh inning rally that made it 8-2. Max Moya singled in two runs and Miraldi followed later in the inning with a two-run single.
 
The Gators got two runs in the eighth inning off reliever Nathan Pickett with one run scoring on a single by Williams and another on an error. The Golden Eagles finished the scoring with a run in the eighth on a single by Quiroz. Pickett worked around a one-out double by Matt Memeo in the ninth inning to complete the win.
 
San Francisco State took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap on a fielder's choice RBI from Ricky Del Zompo and a bases-loaded infield single by Haugen and an error that plated two runs. Cal State L.A. came back in the bottom of the second inning. Tartamella scored on a double-play groundout by Matzner and Chris Lloyd followed with an RBI single.
 
The Gators tacked on three more runs in the third inning to take a 6-2 edge. A two-run single by Del Zompo was the big hit of the inning. Cal State L.A. bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single by Campos and a three-run home run by Quiroz, hit first of the season.
 
Cal State L.A. took the lead in the fourth when Campos singled in Lloyd to make it 7-6 and a sacrifice fly by Lloyd in the fifth made it 8-6. Cal State L.A. tacked on four more runs in the eighth. Davis hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot and Ramirez had a run-scoring double to highlight the inning.
 
The Golden Eagles got outstanding relief pitching in the nightcap. Danny DeSantiago tossed a scoreless sixth inning after coming on with two on and nobody out in relief of Mitchell. Camron Collard took it from there, pitching three scoreless inning and allowing only one hit to earn his first save of the season.
 
The two teams will conclude a four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
