No. 13 Golden Eagles Post A Shutout Over UC San Diego

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had its defense on display Sunday and threw in a goal early in the second half to pick up another California College Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles used a strong defensive effort and a goal from senior Derrick Horn to post a 1-0 win over UC San Diego Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (13-2-1, 11-2-1 CCAA) posted shutouts in both CCAA matches this week.

The No. 13 Golden Eagles had a 24-5 advantage in shots, but could only score one goal against UC San Diego's sturdy defense. UC San Diego goalie Peter Akman made 10 saves for the Tritons (7-5-4, 4-5-3 CCAA) and a Triton defender was able to clear away a header shot by Aza Gomez that seemed headed into the goal late in the first half.

The only goal of the game came early in the second half. Mickey Daly started the play with a pass to Arthur Bahr, who headed the ball over a defender and sent a cross into the box. Horn was there to head it home just inside the right post. It was the first goal of the season for Horn, who was one of 10 seniors honored in pre-game ceremonies on Senior Day.

Tobias Hummel made two saves to record the Golden Eagles' sixth shutout of the season.

Cal State L.A. had several outstanding chances in the first half, but were consistently denied by shots either off-target or saved by Akman. Aza Gomez had the first attempt, in the sixth minute, when he headed a corner kick from Mauricio Barrett only to be stopped by Akman.

In the 12th minute, Brennen Brodersen had a good attempt off a free kick sail just wide and Federico Cino had a good chance sail just wide in the 23rd minute. Akman made an outstanding save on a point-blank bid by Missael Macedo in the 31st minute, just deflecting a shot off the post. It resulted in the corner kick by Barrett that was headed by Gomez and kicked away by a Triton defender just before it went into the goal.

Akman made another outstanding save in the second half on a hard shot by Kristian Gaustad after he had made a steal and had a good open look.

The Golden Eagles honored their 10 seniors -- Noe David, Derrek Horn, Arthur Bahr, Missael Macedo, Kristian Gaustad, Federico Cino, Mauricio Barrett, Aza Gomez, Miguel Cucue and Mickey Daly -- in pregame ceremonies as part of Senior Day.

Cal State L.A. will play a pair of big NCAA Division II West Region games this week against Seattle Pacific on Wednesday night and Western Washington on Friday afternoon before resuming CCAA play on Friday, Oct. 30, at UC San Diego.
