ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team came up short on the road for the second straight time since earning the No. 1 ranking in the nation earlier in the week.
The Golden Eagles suffered their second straight shutout defeat, this one a 1-0 decision to No. 7 Sonoma State on Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Seawolf Field. No. 1 Cal State L.A. (11-2-1, 9-2-1) still leads the CCAA South Division with 28 points, six more than second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Cal State L.A. started off slowly and Sonoma State picked up the game's only goal in the 14th minute off a corner kick. Ryan Hall tallied his fourth goal of the season when he headed in Cam Vickers' corner.
The game was a physical and intense one, with both teams receiving straight red cards on separate plays and Sonoma State also picking up five yellows. The meeting was the first since Cal State L.A. eliminated Sonoma State from the 2008 NCAA Division II playoffs.
After Sonoma State's initial advantage, the Golden Eagles began to get the better chances toward the end of the first half.
Federico Cino beat Sonoma State goalie Brook Johnson with a shot with six minutes to go in the half, but a Seawolf defender was there to clear the ball before it went in the goal. During a seven-minute stretch late in the first half, Sonoma State was issued three yellow cards.
The Golden Eagles had a 7-3 edge in shots in the second half, including a golden opportunity for
Kristian Gaustad, who got behind the Seawolf defense, but had his point-blank shot stopped by Johnson in the 81st minute.
The Golden Eagles had a final shot in the 87th minute, but
Hector Macias took a hard shot that was blocked.
Cino and
Derrek Horn combined for four of the Golden Eagles' nine shots. Johnson and Cal State L.A. goalie
Tobias Hummel each made one save.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State East Bay on Friday.
