Golden Eagles Shine On Day 2 Of CCAA Championships

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams had another strong day on Day 2 of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Championships at Cal State San Marcos.

Summer Stevenson came up big on her last three attempts and claimed the CCAA championship in the triple jump to highlight the day. She took the lead with a mark of 40-4.25 and improved that with a season's best 41-4.25 effort on her sixth and final jump. That mark is No. 3 all-time on Cal State LA's outdoor list and tied for No. 4 in the nation pending further weekend results. The Golden Eagles also got a seventh-place finish from Cecille Lightbourn, who was just off her season's best with a mark of 37-1.75.

"I'm really grateful for the opportunity to compete and represent my team. I stayed patient through the competition and trusted my training, and I'm proud of how I finished," Stevenson said. "This mark is a step forward, but I know I still have more to give."

Kailea Satterwhite, who won the CCAA discus championship for the second time on Thursday, came back with another strong performance on Friday, earning the Golden Eagles three points with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw. Her mark of 145-6 was just off her season's best.

For the men, Cahari Allen took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-9.75, while teammate Mehki Sanchez was ninth with a mark of 43-0.25. Allen gave the men's team its first points of the championships. Nicholas Delgado was 11th in the steeplechase with a mark of 10:07.79 and Tony Espinosa was 12th in the decathlon with 4,618 points.

Drew Hill had another outstanding day, racing to the top time in the 200 prelims, matching his season's best mark of 20.92. Wallace Aflamah also qualified for Saturday's final after placing sixth in 21.29. Hill has the top qualifying times in both the 100 and 200 entering Saturday, while Aflamah had the No. 2 time in the 100 and No. 6 time in the 200.

Tony Espinosa also had a strong day on Friday - and a long one. In addition to competing in the decathlon, he also qualified for the 110 hurdles final after placing third in the prelims with a season's best mark of 14.74.

The third and final day of the championships will be held on Saturday with Cal State LA having a good number of competitors vying for championships and all-conference spots.
