SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's baseball team closed out its regular season on Sunday and will now have to wait to see if there is more games ahead.
The Golden Eagles were done in by a eight-run fifth inning and fell to Cal State San Marcos, 12-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Dennis A. Pugh Field. Cal State LA (26-24, 16-16 CCAA) is currently in fifth place in the conference race and has completed its conference season. Cal State San Marcos (29-14, 16-12 CCAA) is in third place in the conference, two games ahead of Cal State LA.
The Golden Eagles are one-half game behind Cal State San Bernardino for fourth place and two games ahead of Cal State East Bay and Chico State for fifth. The Pioneers and Wildcats face each other next week and need a sweep to catch the idle Golden Eagles. One loss by both teams will clinch a tournament spot for Cal State LA. Cal State San Bernardino closes out its season at Cal State Dominguez Hills and needs two wins to secure a finish above the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was tied with Cal State San Marcos at 1-1 into the fifth inning, but the Cougars exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame and went on to clinch the series win.
Cesar Chavez had two hits and two runs batted in for the Golden Eagles, while
Ben Lee had two hits and two walks.
Kadyn Victorian had a hit, run scored and RBI, while
Jonathan Manuel and
Adam Axtell also scored runs.
