2025 Men's and Women's Cross Country - Season Summary
LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's and women's cross country teams had an encouraging blend of newcomers and returners who battled together through a challenging 2025 season.
Both teams had larger rosters than they have had in recent years and the Golden Eagles overcame injuries to compete well during regular-season invitationals and postseason events at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships and NCAA Division II West Regional.
The men's season was highlighted by newcomer
Raye Duarte, who was the team's No. 1 runner and who earned the program's first CCAA Runner of the Week award since Moises Marquez in 2021. He received the honor for the week of Oct. 13-19 after a strong performance at the UC Riverside Highlander Invitational. Duarte, a junior from Victor Valley College, was the team's No. 1 runner in all six competitions in the 2025 season.
He finished 49th at the CCAA Championships for the Golden Eagles and 114th at the NCAA Division II West Regional.
While Duarte was a clear No. 1 runner for the Golden Eagles, several other runners helped round out the scoring for Cal State LA.
Orion Perez, a freshman from Mendez High School, was coming on strong at the end of the season for the Golden Eagles and was the team's No. 2 runner at both the CCAA Championships and NCAA West Regional.
Trent Osburn also had some strong showings for the Golden Eagles and was the team's No. 3 runner at the CCAA Championships and the No. 4 runner at the NCAA West Regional, while
Nicholas Delgado was the team's No. 3 runner at the NCAA West Regional and No. 4 runner at the CCAA Championships.
Demitri Hernandez was the team's No. 5 runner at the CCAA Championships, while
Miguel Morales-Lopez was the No. 5 runner at the NCAA West Regional.
The men's team enjoyed some solid consistency with Delgado, Duarte, Hernandez, Morales-Lopez, Osburn and
Orion Perez competing in all six meets for the Golden Eagles and
Damian Bonds,
Antonio Mendoza-Lopez and
Christian Perez competing in five of the six and
Joshua Lovato competing in four.
The women, meanwhile, had some strong battles for the No. 1 position and four different runners claimed the top spot during the season.Â
Nelly Garnica, the team's No. 1 runner in all six meets in 2024, had the top finish at the CCAA Championships, placing 90th overall. She was also the team's No. 2 runner at the NCAA West Regional, finishing 170th.
Mikaela Holguin, who showed great improvement in her second year with the program, was the team's No. 1 runner at the NCAA West Regional and the team's No. 2 finisher at the CCAA Championships. Holguin was also the team's No. 1 runner at t he The Master's Invitational and Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and her three No. 1 finishes among Golden Eagle runners were the most on the team.
Newcomer
Miyoko Mataalii was a key addition to the team and was the team's No. 1 runner in her Cal State LA debut at the Biola Invitational. She was third for the Golden Eagles at the CCAA Championships and the NCAA West Regional.Â
