WHITTIER -- Sarah Olmos won her first-round singles match to highlight the opening day of competition for Cal State LA's women's tennis team at the ITA Division II Women's West Regional Championships.

Olmos, who advanced to the quarterfinals in last year's regional tournament, got her senior season off to a good start with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 win over Delia Maier of Colorado Mesa on Thursday at Whittier College. She then faced No. 5 seed Jessica Plazas of Academy of Art in the second round, falling by scores of 6-3, 6-0.

Five Golden Eagles competed in singles matches on Thursday.

Newcomer Charlotte Downs had the toughest draw, falling to No. 1 seed Sophie Rachor of Concordia, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round. Another newcomer, Maldini Simic dropped a tight 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 decision to Sofia Acuna of Dominican.

Hideka Takamura fell to Estelle Najean of Academy of Art, 6-2, 6-3 and Lea Rolland fell to Sofia Pavlova of Academy of Art, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Simic and Takamura beat Sofia Acura and Astrid Craig of Dominican, 8-4 before falling to Emilie Lugan and Bryn Johnson of Concordia, 8-3 in the second round.

Downs and Courtlyn Lam fell to Julia Jordan and Vini Margaret Bautista of Azusa Pacific, 8-1 and Rolland and Summer Roybal fell to Annabelle Mulic and Emma Yu of Stanislaus State, 8-5.

The tournament continues on Friday.
