LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams endured quite a day Saturday at the Cal State LA Invitational.

The Golden Eagles' first home meet of the season was pummeled by heavy rains and was delayed by lightening, but the show did go on and several were able to compete. Cal State LA also honored 16 student-athletes on Senior Day before the heavy rains hit.

It was an abbreviated meet due to the adverse weather conditions.

The largest field was in the men's long jump where 11 competitors took flight under tough conditions. Dhanushka Sandaruwan, competing unattached, won the event with a jump of 23-11.75. Cal State LA jumpers took the next five spots with Qwintin Workman placing second in 22-6.25, Porte-Joie Tshiaba finishing third in 22-4.50, Shawn Simms finishing fourth in 21-4, Tashinga Hlanguyo placing fifth in 21-3.25 and Tayric Elliott placing sixth in 20-10.75.

Alyssa Johnson won the women's triple jump with a mark of 30-10.50 and Lam Nguyen won the men's triple jump in 38-0.25.

In the running events, returning All-American Leon Tafirenyika won the 400 meters in 48.82, while teammate Clifton Johnson was second in 50.17. Darnelle Harris won the men's 100 meters in 11.01, ahead of second-place Martin Zarzuela, who was first in the second heat. 

Soccer star Destiny Moedano, making her track and field debut for Cal State LA, won the 800 meters in 2:26.22, while Shannon Turner won the men's 800 meters in 1:58.86 ahead of second-place Jesus Nichol II, who had a time of 2:01.79.

Cal State LA's men's 4x400 relay team of Tafirenyika, Workman, Nichol II and Turner won in 3:24.07.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday at the opening day of the Kim Duyst Invitational at Stanislaus State.
