Golden Eagles Win Twice On A Good Saturday

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team enjoyed a great day at Reeder Field on Saturday against Colorado School of Mines.

The Golden Eagles prevailed in a 10-9 slugfest in the opener and then got a near no-hitter from Trevor Baugh in an 8-0 seven-inning win in the nightcap. Baugh didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning and, after allowing a one-out single to Shuta Araki, turned things over to Troy Maki, who promptly got a doubleplay grounder to end it. Baugh walked five and struck out six to pick up his first win with the Golden Eagles.

Fabian Moran went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Matthew Piotrowski had a pair of hits, including his second home run of the season. Andrew Tovar, who had four hits in the opener, added two more in the nightcap and drove in two.

Cal State LA took a 6-0 lead after three innings and added a single run in the fourth on Piotrowski's home run and another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kai Penuelas.

Cal State LA took the opener in a wild game that saw Colorado School of Mines erase a 6-1 first-inning deficit and take an 8-6 lead in the fourth before the Golden Eagles took a 9-8 advantage in the bottom of the inning. The Orediggers tied it in the sixth and Cal State LA got what turned out to be the game winner in the eighth on a wild pitch that allowed Art Ruiz to score.

Ethan Gonzalez had the big blast of the game, a grand slam home run with two outs in the first that gave the Golden Eagles a 6-1 lead.

Jackson Woolwine went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Orediggers and Garret Nielsen smacked a two-run home run as part of the four-run fourth inning that staked his team to an 8-6 lead.

Tovar went 4-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and the four RBI. Ruiz and Piotrowski had two hits each.

Julian Tellez started and allowed five hits and two earned runs over 2 1/3 innings, while Deandre Carter worked the next 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs. Jacob Rangel got the final out of the sixth inning to keep the Golden Eagles close at 8-6 and Maki pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the game into the eighth. Mikell Chavez got the final out of the eighth inning and picked up the win, while Penuelas worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first save.

Cal State LA will conclude the four-game series with Colorado School of Mines on Sunday at 11 a.m.
