Golden Eagles Pick Up A Big Win At Simon Fraser

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team recorded some program history Saturday night when the No. 1 Golden Eagles beat Simon Fraser for the first time in four tries.

Jeppe Paulsen had the game-winning goal in the 71st minute and the defending national champions limited Simon Fraser to just three shots on goal in a 1-0 victory at Terry Fox Field. Cal State LA (2-0) posted shutout wins in its two games in British Columbia.

The Golden Eagles also ended nine years of frustration against Simon Fraser. The Golden Eagles were 0-3 all-time against Simon Fraser, including a 2-1 double overtime loss in University Stadium in the 2013 NCAA Division II playoffs. Cal State LA also dropped 2-1 decisions to Simon Fraser in Los Angeles in the 2018 and 2019 seasons before breaking through with a tremendous win on Saturday.

Cal State LA had a healthy 23-7 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles had a 13-2 edge in shots in the first half.

Alvaro Unanua made five saves to record his 14th career shutout at Cal State LA. He also picked up a combined shutout with Julian Aadlandsvik in a 6-0 win over Saint Martin's on Thursday. Unanua made a nice diving save to preserve the shutout with less than three minutes to go.

The game-winner came on a beautiful goal by Paulsen. Simon Johansen started the play with a nice pass to a streaking Anton Olofsson down the right sideline. Olofsson then sent a perfectly-placed cross into the box that Paulsen brilliantly knocked into the goal from point-blank range.

The Golden Eagles threatened offensively all night. Jacob Chong and Olofsson had a team-high four shots each, while Oliver Diaz had three shots. Daniel Garcia, Lucas Rosales, Bryan Ortega and Andrew Portis had two shots each.

Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday at 7 p.m. in the 2022 home opener against Concordia.
