LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team played its first home game since capturing the 2021 NCAA Division II national championship and the 2022 squad looked impressive while stretching the program's unbeaten streak to 21 games.
The Golden Eagles got goals from
Daniel Garcia and
Alex Rodriguez and a sturdy defensive effort that limited Concordia to just four shots and only two on goal.
No. 1 Cal State LA posted its third shutout of the season in three games and
Alvaro Unanua made two saves to secure the win.
Cal State LA had a 13-4 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Cal State LA had an 8-1 edge in the opening half in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles had a flurry of chances in the opening 10 minutes, but could quite break through.
Jacob Chong had a dangerous shot blocked and the rebound went to Anton Oloffson, who, with the goalkeeper out, fired a hard shot that was kept out by a defender.
Lucas Rosales then sent another try toward the net that was also kept out by a defender.
Cal State LA broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute off a free kick. Rosales got the ball to Garcia, who dribbled into the box from the side and rifled a beautiful shot in for his first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 2-0 early in the second half. Rodriguez headed in a pass from
Simon Johansen for his first goal of the season in the 47th minute.
Cal State LA has had nine different players score goals while outscoring the opposition, 9-0, in the first three games.
That was all the scoring as Cal State LA limited the chances for Concordia and Unanua was once again a calming force in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Biola.
