LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team honored its seven seniors who are wrapping up their playing careers next week and also enjoyed a blast from the past while honoring four members from the 2020 team.
The Golden Eagles conducted the ceremonies before their last home game of the season on Sunday at Reeder Field. Cal State LA fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 6-3, in the final home game of the season and had to settle for a California Collegiate Athletic Association series split against the Broncos (28-17, 23-12 CCAA), who are tied for second in the conference with four games remaining.Â
Before the game started, the Golden Eagles honored
Adrian Lugo-Navarrete,
Christian Longoria, Julian Garcia,
Thomas Chavez,
Nick Penzetta,
Will Picketts and
Micah Hee from the 2022 team as well as 2020 team members Tyler Odekirk, Miguel Garcia, Lance Jennings and Joey Deceglie.
Once the game started, the Golden Eagles jumped out to quick 3-0 lead after one inning.
Michael Rosales smacked a two-run triple and scored on a single by
Gerardo Castaneda for the quick three-run advantage.
Cal Poly Pomona, though, got two runs back in the top of the second on a run-scoring groundouts from Tyler Chaffee and Dylan Long and then took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning on a three-run home run from Ryon Knowles.
Edrian Rangel bounced back after the rough start and allowed five hits and three runs over six innings to get the win. Matt Orozco pitched three shutout innings to get the save.
Micah Hee started for the Golden Eagles and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, while
Mikell Chavez was outstanding over the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing only three hits and a run while striking out six.
Cal State LA will conclude its 2022 season with a four-game series at San Francisco State beginning on Thursday.
