Golden Eagles Endure A Long Day At The Park

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team enjoyed a grand opening on Friday, but the Golden Eagles didn't have the same success on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles dropped a pair of contests during the Cal State LA Crossover Tournament, falling to Northwest Nazarene, 6-0, and then coming up short against Dixie State, 9-3. Cal State LA (1-2) had a total of 10 hits in the two games.

In the first game on Saturday, Dixie State beat Northwest Nazarene, 13-4.

The tourney is scheduled to be completed on Sunday. With rain in the forecast, the start time for the Cal State LA-Dixie State game has been moved to 9:30 a.m. A determination will be made early Sunday morning.

Cal State LA, which opened the season with nine runs on Friday, was blanked in the opener on Saturday, Northwest Nazarene (1-3) got a combined shutout from Kyle Ethridge, Eryk Lopez and Max Holtzclaw. Ethridge went six shutout innings and allowed only two hits, Lopez gave up two hits over 1 2/3 innings and Holtzclaw didn't allow a hit over the final 1 1/3 innings. The trio combined for only one walk and six strikeouts.

Travis Burleson allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings. After allowing three runs in the second inning, he gave up only one run over his final three innings of work. Jacob Northup gave up one run over two innings, Andrew Matus allowed one run over 1 2/3 innings and Brent Jacques retired the only batter he faced.

Johnny Pacheco had two of the four hits for the Golden Eagles. Randy Buenrostro and Allen Pacheco had the other hits.

Ben Johnson had a home run and four RBI for Northwest Nazarene. 

In the final game of the day, Dixie State (6-0) scored four times in the first and five times in the fourth on its way to a 9-3 win over the Golden Eagles. Dixie State had 17 hits, including four from leadoff hitter Lane Pritchard, who opened the game with a home run. Tyson Fisher had three hits and Tyler Hollow had a pair of hits and two RBI.

Travis Burleson had a two-run double in the fifth inning for the Golden Eagles. Ryan Lewis had a pair of hits and Tyler Odekirk scored a pair of runs.

Fino Amador, Brent Jacques and Jeff Zordani combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief.
