Box Score PASADENA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team got some clutch individual performances to pull out a tight decision against Caltech Monday in Pasadena.
The Golden Eagles took two of the three doubles matches and three of the six singles contests to edge Caltech, 5-4. With the Golden Eagles trailing, 4-3,
Chelsey Ruiz finished up a three-set win at No. 3 singles to tie it and
Mariko Sagara won a three-set decision at No. 5 singles to win it. Cal State LA (2-0) won its second straight match. The contest was an exhibition match for Caltech, which was coming off a 6-3 exhibition victory over UC Irvine last week.
Cal State LA took an early lead by taking a pair of doubles matches.
Noa Davico and Sagara picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles and
Berta Acero and
Sakura Kurokawa won at No. 3 doubles, 7-6.
In singles, Kurokawa won her match at No. 4 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to get the Golden Eagles their third point. Ruiz rallied from a first-set deficit and beat Sarina Liu, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, in the tightest match of the day and Sagara clinched the win with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Ankita Roychoudhury.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Pomona-Pitzer at 9 a.m.
