ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team didn't get the results it was looking for Sunday at Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles picked up a 9-5 win over the Seawolves Sunday afternoon, but that was a preceded by a 4-3 loss in 14 innings in a game halted on Saturday due to darkness and was followed by a 3-0 loss in the series finale. Cal State LA (15-18, 14-15 CCAA) slipped two games back of Sonoma State (18-16, 16-13 CCAA) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings after dropping three of the four games in the series.
The day started with the Golden Eagles and Seawolves locked in a 1-1 tie after eight innings in a game that started on Saturday. The Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the 13th inning on a two-run double by
Nate Alam, but the Seawolves tied it with two runs in the bottom of the inning and won it with a run in the 14th.
Dylan Suppan tossed four shutout innings of relief and didn't allow a hit to give the Golden Eagles a chance to win. He walked three and struck out two.
Saxon Andross had started the game for the Golden Eagles on Saturday and was outstanding, allowing only four hits and one run while walking one and striking out eight.
In the first of two regular-scheduled games,
Alec Daily limited the Seawolves to only one run over his first seven innings and the Golden Eagles raced to a 8-1 lead. Daily pitched into the ninth inning before tiring. He gave up seven hits and five runs while walking five and striking out nine.
Johnny Virgen entered the game in the ninth inning with one out and the bases loaded and got the final two outs for his first save of the season.
Jordan Peabody was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI,
Adam Gordon was 2-for-6 with two RBI,
Spencer Sundahl was 2-for-5 with one run scored,
Aaron McCann had a big two-run double as part of a five-run rally in the seventh inning and
Anthony Moreno was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
In the final game of the day, the Golden Eagles managed only four hits and had 10 strikeouts in the seven-inning contest. Cal State LA was blanked for the first time this season.
Micah Hee had a strong start for the Golden Eagles, but took his first loss of the season. He allowed four hits and three runs in six innings.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the start of a four-game series at Cal State San Marcos. The series will include a single game at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday and conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
