IRVINE -- Cal State LA's beach volleyball team made a little bit of history Friday during a busy day at Concordia.
The Golden Eagles (2-6) recorded their first-ever win over a four-year opponent by beating Hope International, 3-2, before ending the day with a hard-fought 4-1 loss to the host Eagles.
Karla Santos and
Alejandra Negron continued their outstanding play as the No. 1 pair, posting a pair of wins on Friday and extending their winning streak to four. Both of their wins were in straight sets, 23-21, 21-19, over Hope International and 21-17 and 21-12 over Concordia. The Golden Eagles also got a clutch three-set win at No. 5 pairs from
Caitlyn Bato and
Adriana Maldonado, 16-21, 21-17, 15-10.
The fifth and deciding point was earned by Cal State LA's No. 2 pair of
Janessa Mata and
Jessica Kaeka, 21-12, 21-18.
Against Concordia, Santos and Negron earned the lone point at No. 1 pairs. Mata and Kaeka played another good match at No. 2 pairs, but fell in a three-set match, 22-20, 17-21, 15-11.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a match at Westcliff University.
