Summary

Biography

2020: Had another strong season with the beach volleyball team in the spring in her third year with the program. Played in six matches at No. 3 pairs before the season was halted.

2019: Was a key member of Cal State LA’s beach volleyball team and played on the No. 2 pairs with Jessica Kaeka. Had a third strong season with the Golden Eagles’ indoor team in the fall as a defensive specialist. Played in a total of 12 matches and 17 sets. Had 11 digs and two service aces. Had both aces in a three-set win over Humboldt State on Oct. 18. Had a season-high four digs and helped key a Golden Eagle rally from two sets down in a five-set win over San Francisco State on Nov. 15. Earned a 2018-19 California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Award and a 2019 CCAA Fall Academic Award in 2019.

2018: Was a contributing member of Cal State LA’s beach volleyball team as a freshman. Returned for a second season with the Golden Eagles’ indoor team in the fall and showed tremendous improvement. Appeared in 17 matches and a total of 44 sets. Recorded a career-high 12 digs to help the Golden Eagles to a big five-set win at Sonoma State on Oct. 11. Also had 14 digs and two service aces in that match. Finished the season with 21 kills, nine set assists, four service aces, 57 digs and two blocks. Earned a 2017-18 CCAA All-Academic Award and also received a 2018 CCAA Fall Academic Award.

2017: Made her debut for Cal State LA as a true freshman and saw immediate playing time with the indoor team. Appeared in 10 matches and a total of 21 sets. Had four kills and two service aces. Also had three digs and one block and finished with 6.5 points.

At Mt. Carmel High School: Earned the school’s Outstanding Athlete award as a senior and played in San Diego County Senior All-Star match. Was named to two All-Tournament Teams and earned a Sportsmanship Award from CIF. Was a San Diego Union-Tribune Student-Athlete. Earned the team’s Coach’s Award and was a team Most Valuable Player as a sophomore. Earned two Athlete of the Year nominations at her school.

Personal: Daughter of Max Mata and Ruth Mata-Rodriguez. Majoring in political science. Enjoys kickin’ it. Lists going on a 13-match winning streak and making it to the NCAA Tournament last year as her most exciting experience in sports.
