ST. GEORGE, UTAH -- Cal State LA's baseball team finally got its 2019 season underway, but the result wasn't what the Golden Eagles were looking for.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a one-run lead in the fifth inning and Dixie State went on to a 10-6 victory at Bruce Hurst Field. Cal State LA (0-1) collected seven hits in the game, including two each from
Tyler Odekirk and
Nate Alam.
Saxon Andross got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed six hits and five runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Jackson Bond allowed five hits and five runs over the next three innings and Johnny Virgin allowed a hit and a walk over two-thirds of an inning.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 3-0, in the second innings, but struck for one run in the third and four in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.
Jordan Peabody drove in the Golden Eagles' first run with a single to drive in Odekirk, who drew a two-out walk and stole second in advance of Peabody's hit.
Cal State LA then got four runs in the fourth.
Spencer Sundahl and
Jesus Mercado both drew walks and advanced on a passed ball.
Jesse Burke delivered a two-run single to tie the game at 3-3 and he scored on a triple by Alam to give Cal State LA the lead. Alam then scored on a single by Odekirk to make it 5-3.
Dixie State tied the score at 5-5, but the Golden Eagles regained the advantage in the fifth when they scored an unearned run. Mercado scored when Alam reached on an error with two outs.
Dixie State took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Jake Engel hit a two-run home run for a 6-5 advantage.
Cal State LA will play two games on Saturday, first against Dixie State and a second game against Colorado Mesa.
