AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team began play with some strong results at the 2018 ITA West Region Championships presented by Oracle and hosted by Azusa Pacific on Thursday.

Chelsey Ruiz, Isabella Lopez and Berta Acero Garcia all won first-round matches before falling in second-round contests. Cal State LA also had two doubles teams competing and each won one match before falling in the second.

Ruiz beat Suzuki of Concordia, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to No. 8 seed Alexandra Weil of UC San Diego, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in her second match.

Lopez beat Kaitlyn Nguyen of Dominican, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to Kara Hinton of Azusa Pacific, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, while Acero Garcia beat Jahan Bayramova of Holy Names, 6-0, 6-0 before falling to No. 7 seed Klara Thell-Lenntorp of Academy of Art, 7-6, 6-4.

Amanda Schneider fell to Nicole Camaratta of Point Loma, 6-1, 6-0, in a first-round match and Mariko Sagara fell to Hannah Highsmith of Sonoma State, 6-2, 6-3.

In consolation play, Sagara beat Allison Torres of Biola, 8-0 and Schneider lost to Johanna Keeline of Concordia, 8-1.

Schneider and Lopez beat Taylor McGowan and Camaratta of Point Loma in doubles, 8-3 before falling in a tight match to Carolyn Brooner and Hannah Highsmith of Sonoma State, 8-7. Acero Garcia and Ruiz beat Madison McKay and Johanson of Point Loma, 8-3, before falling in a close match to No. 3 seed Warren and Jenna DeTurk of Sonoma State, 8-5.

The three-day tournament, which crowns singles and doubles champions for the West Region, will run through Saturday.
