SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team gave the No. 6-ranked team in the country all it could handle Saturday on a rainy day in Northern California.
The Golden Eagles took an early lead after earning wins in two of the three doubles matches, but fell just short to host Academy of Art, 5-4, at the San Francisco Tennis Club. Cal State LA (4-7) ended up with a split in its quick Northern California trip. The match took more than five hours to complete due to rain delays and the fact only three courts were available for singles.
Cal State LA got some inspired performances in doubles and took the lead against Academy of Art (7-2).
Isabella Lopez and
Luciana Di Laura won at No. 2 doubles over Maria Andrisani and Taisiia Andrieieva, 8-3 and
Chelsey Ruiz and
Mariko Sagara won at No. 3 doubles, 8-2 to give Cal State LA a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles managed two points in singles, one at No. 6 singles, where Ruiz won in straight sets over Kristina Gross, 6-0, 6-1 and the other at No. 2 singles, where
Amanda Schneider prevailed over Andrisani after taking the first set, 7-6, before Andrisani retired in the second.
The tightest match of the day came at No. 4 singles, where Andrieieva rallied to outlast Lopez, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Concordia.
