Golden Eagles Drop Season Opener At Westmont

SANTA BARBARA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team opened its 2018 season with a tough loss at NAIA Westmont College on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles won just one of three doubles contests and split the six singles matches in a 5-4 loss at Abbott Tennis Courts. Cal State LA (0-1) is ranked No. 15 in the nation.

Elizaveta Sokolova won her match at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Isabel Lee. Luciana Di Laura was also victorious at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4, over Delaney Roche and Mariko Sagara won at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Zarina Huber. Snezana Ivanovic lost a tough three-set match at No. 6 singles, falling to Taylor Cheung-Damonte, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Cal State LA won just one of three tightly-contested contests. Sagara and Chelsea Ruiz prevailed at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, over Tatum Phillips and Roche. Sokolova and Amanda Schneider lost at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, to Lee and Peyton Trebisky and Isabella Lopez and Di Laura lost a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (7-5 in the tiebreaker).

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a match at Biola.
