LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team got off to a tough start Saturday against No. 14 UC San Diego and was unable to turn things around.
The Golden Eagles dropped all three doubles contests and fell to the Tritons, 7-2, in La Jolla. Cal State LA (2-5) picked up singles wins from
Luciana Di Laura and
Chelsey Ruiz, but the Tritons (4-4) captured the other four singles points in straight sets.
Cal State LA lost three competitive doubles matches. The closest battle came at No. 2 doubles where Di Laura and
Isabella Lopez lost in a tiebreaker to Alexandra Weil and Madison Hale, 8-7 (7-5).
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Amanda Schneider fell to Ashley Chao and Becky Chou, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles and Ruiz and
Mariko Sagara fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, to Nousha Nowamooz and Chloe Wight.
Di Laura had the best singles outing for the Golden Eagles, recording a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Weil at No. 3 singles. Ruiz pulled out a win at No. 6 singles over Hale, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in a third-set supertiebreaker.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a road match at Concordia.
