Golden Eagles Open Play In Northridge Tourney

NORTHRIDGE -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team opened play Friday in windy and smoky conditions at the CSUN Fall Invitational.

The Golden Eagles had four players competing in the opening rounds of doubles and singles. The three-day tourney is scheduled to run through Sunday.

Chelsey Ruiz and Mariko Sagara won their first two matches in the "E" Doubles Flight, beating Autumn Prudhomme and Celina Morel of Grand Canyon, 6-4, and Sophia Lee and Ines Diaz of Biola, 6-4.

Amanda Schneider and Berta Acero Garcia defeated Lindsey Gelinas and Tammy Van of UC Riverside, 6-0, before falling to Carlota Casasmpere and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri of Long Beach State, 6-4 in the "D" Doubles Flight.

In singles play, Schneider fell to Jolene Coetzee of Cal State Northridge, 6-0, 6-4 in the "B" Flight, Acero Garcia defeated Laura Malsert of San Jose State, 6-3, 6-4 in the "C" Flight, Ruiz fell to Lucia Zagar of Youngstown State, 7-6, 7-5, in the "E" Flight and Sagara beat Sophia Gawrit in the "G" Flight, 6-2, 6-0.

Play is scheduled to continue on Saturday.
