LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's baseball team kept the good times rolling Saturday and impressively earned its way into the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles, who were mired in an eight-game losing streak and staring at a 7-1 seventh-inning deficit late Friday, suddenly ound themselves celebrating three victories in less than 24 hours over No. 12 UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles (23-21, 16-18 CCAA) stunned the Tritons with a seven-run rally for an 8-7 win in Los Angeles on Friday and completed the series with 9-4 and 2-1 victories in La Jolla on Saturday.
It's probably not a stretch to say that the seven-run, 10-hit seventh inning on Friday turned the season around. If nothing else, it got the Golden Eagles into the conference tourney, where they will be one of six teams competing for the tournament title and automatic NCAA playoff berth in Stockton beginning on May 10.
Cal State LA will be returning to the site of its 2013 CCAA Championship when the Golden Eagles roared through the tournament with a powerful hitting display.
If anyone questioned whether the Golden Eagles would carry any momentum from Friday's turnaround victory, it was answered early on Saturday. Cal State LA jumped on UC San Diego (29-15, 21-13 CCAA) for six runs in the second inning in the opener on Saturday and
Christian Broussard, Jr. and
Justin Davis took it from there in a 9-4 triumph.
Jorge Garcia, who had a big two-run double in the seventh inning of Friday's win, slugged a two-run home run to start the second-inning surge on Saturday.
And he wasn't done there. Garcia added a solo home run in the seventh inning to complete the scoring in the opener and then hit what proved to be the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh inning to erase a 1-0 deficit in the nightcap.
Broussard also had a big day, drilling a three-run double to finish the six-run second inning rally and limiting a high-powered UC San Diego offense to seven hits and three runs over seven strong innings. Davis allowed only one run over the final two innings to secure the win for Broussard, who improved to 7-3 on the season.
Garcia and
Andrew Hermanson had three hits in the opener, while
Nathan Navarrete and Broussard had two hits each.
Angel Sanchez scored two runs.
Cal State LA then got outstanding efforts from five pitchers in the seven-inning nightcap to win its third straight game and the series.
Saxon Andross started things off with 4 2/3 superb innings, allowing only three hits and one run.
Robbie Stowell got the final out of the fifth,
Daniel Ferrell and
George Alamillo combined to blank the Tritons in the sixth and
Gabriel Gentner was strong once again in the seventh to record his second save of the series and eighth of the season.
The resilient Golden Eagles trailed 1-0 entering the seventh, but that changed quickly.
Sean Watkins reached on an error to lead off the inning and Garcia followed with his third home run of the day, a two-run shot to right to provide the winning runs.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series against Cal State San Marcos on Senior Night where the Golden Eagles will honor their 12 seniors in pregame ceremonies. There is also a special May the 4th Be With You party planned with giveaways, contests, and, thanks to the stunning turnaround in the past 24 hours, something great to celebrate.
