LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's baseball team put in some extra work on Saturday and emerged with a doubleheader split against visiting Northwest Nazarene.
The Golden Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision in the opener on an unearned run in the 10
th inning and then got a game-winning hit in the eighth inning from
Andrew Hermanson to pull out a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Cal State LA (5-1) left a whopping 29 runners on base in the two games and also committed their first errors of the season. In fact, the Golden Eagles had four errors in the opener alone.
The opener was a brilliant game for the four pitchers who saw action. Cal State LA starter
Saxon Andross allowed only four hits and one run in seven strong innings and reliever
James Mendez gave up just an unearned run on two hits in three innings.
Northwest Nazarene starter Ross Clevenger allowed only four hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings with four walks and eight strikeouts and Brady Baker allowed only one hit over 4 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Northwest Nazarene got a run in the second on a run-scoring single by Casey Cornwell and the Golden Eagles tied it on a solo home run in the fourth inning by
Garrett Dean. Kyle Redford singled and scored the winning run in the 10
th inning on Cal State LA's fourth error of the game.
In the nightcap,
Justin Davis allowed five hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings and
Gabriel Gentner gave up one run on a hit with four strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.
Brandon Zavala pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the win.
Dylan Suppan allowed five hits and one earned run over five innings for Northwest Nazarene.
Nathan Navarrete was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning to give Cal State LA its first run and
Christian Broussard, Jr. reached on an error to make it 2-0.
Northwest Nazarene got single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to take a 3-2 lead, but
Angel Sanchez drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Navarrete drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and
Jorge Garcia walked with one out to set the table for Hermanson, who jumped on the first pitch he saw for the game-winning single.
Cal State LA and Northwest Nazarene will conclude the series with a single game on Monday at 6 p.m.
