NORTHRIDGE -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team competed well Friday in the opening day of the CSUN Fall Invitational at Cal State Northridge.
Elizaveta Sokolova and 
Isabella Lopez both recorded victories over Division I opponents to highlight the first day for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA had several other players involved in tight matches against Division I competition.
Sokolova advanced past Iowa State's Erin Freeman, 7-5, 3-0, retired to continue her impressive showing so far this fall. Sokolova was playing in the Singles Black Division. 
Amanda Schneider was also playing in that bracket and came up short in a three-set battle with Iowa State's Kat Repina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
In the Silver Bracket, Lopez beat Lucia Zagar of Youngstown State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while 
Luciana Di Laura had a three-set battle in a tight loss to Tamara Teufl of Youngstown State, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the White Bracket, 
Mariko Sagara also had a three-set match and fell to Ana Stroe of Youngstown State, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 and 
Chelsey Ruiz lost in a three-set match to Cal State Fullerton's Tiani Jadulang, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. In the Blue Bracket, 
Snezana Ivanovich lost to Taylor Valenzuela of Cal State Fullerton in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and 
Layna Schwartz fell to Taylor Cheung-Damonte, 6-1, 7-6.
In doubles, Cal State LA again had several tough matches. The team of Sagara and Ruiz had the best results, beating Hall and Dean of UC Irvine, 6-2 and then posting a 6-1 win over Valenciano and Phillips of UC Irvine. Ivanovich and Schwartz lost to Bagumyan and Nosenko of Cal State Northridge, 6-2, and Jadulang of Valenzuela of Cal State Fullerton, 6-0.
Sokolova and Schneider, competing in the Red Bracket (the top bracket), fell to Gulin and Devarakonda of Long Beach State, 7-5, and then fell to Macias and Hassim of Youngstown State, 6-4,
In the Black Bracket, Lopez and DiLaura fell to Kim and Taslagyan of Cal State Northridge, 6-2, and Parker and Tsodikova of UC Irvine, 7-5.
Cal State LA will continue play in the tournament with another full day of competition on Saturday.
