LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got some outstanding pitching and enough timely hitting to even its series with Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles spotted the Broncos a 3-0 lead before rallying for two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to post a 6-4 victory Friday night at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (10-27, 9-17 CCAA) got a strong start from
Daniel Diaz, clutch relief from
Gabriel Gentner and a mid-game rally to post the win.
Diaz went 7 2/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out six. Gentner retired all four hitters he faced with three strikeouts. In fact, Diaz and Gentner struck out seven batters over the last three innings.
After the Broncos (25-14, 17-10 CCAA)Â took advantage of two errors on the first play of the game to take a 1-0 lead, Cal Poly Pomona added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Cal Poly Pomona starter Peter Bayer was outstanding, blanking the Golden Eagles through the first four innings before Cal State LA closed the gap with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Angel Sanchez and Issac Dominguez drew one-out walks and
Nathan Navarrete delivered a double to score Sanchez and make it 3-1.
Ryan Welker drove in the second run with a groundout.
Cal State LA then took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth.
Christian Broussard, Jr. and
Garrett Dean singled to start the inning and
Paul Martinez moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. After
Ryan Dixon was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sanchez singled to right to tie it at 3-3. Dominguez drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-3 and Navarrete grounded out to drive in the third run of the inning and make it 5-3.
Cal State LA added another run in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Dean.
Diaz got the first two outs of the eighth inning, but a double by Daniel Pitts made it 6-4 and Gentner entered the game with the tying runs on base. He got the first of his three strikeouts to end the inning and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Cal State LA will conclude the series at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
