LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team was able to generate a lot of offense Thursday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal Poly Pomona, but the Golden Eagles were unable to slow down the Broncos.
The two teams combined for 36 hits, but Cal Poly Pomona did more damage in a 13-7 win over the Golden Eagles at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (9-27, 8-17 CCAA) had 17 hits, including four each from
Ryan Welker and
Paul Martinez. Cal Poly Pomona (25-13, 17-9 CCAA) had 19 hits, including home runs from Nic Hernandez and Daniel Pitts.
The Broncos scored four times in the top of the first inning and never trailed. Cal State LA got as close as 7-4 after four innings, but couldn't get any closer after that as Cal Poly Pomona scored runs in seven of its nine at bats.
Cal State LA had its opportunities, but stranded 12 runners on base.
Welker went 4-for-5, including three doubles, and scored twice and drove in one. Martinez was 4-for-5 with one RBI,
Ryan Dixon was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and
Angel Sanchez was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Jared James was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI for the Broncos, while Jason Padlo and Pitts also had three hits each. Jacob Bernardy, Ryan Webberley and Nicholas Bruno had two hits each.
Jesus Farias started and allowed eight hits and six runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Brandon Zavala allowed five earned runs over the next five innings and
Merrick Patito allowed two hits and one run in 1 2/3 innings.
Peter Beattie worked 4 2/3 innings of strong relief for the Broncos to get the win. He allowed seven hits and two runs.
Anthony Moreno's sacrifice fly got the Golden Eagles on the board in the bottom of the second after Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added another run in the third on a run-scoring groundout by
Dakota Hernandez and scored twice in the fourth on a single by
Nathan Navarrete to make it 7-4.
Cal Poly Pomona responded with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to extend its lead to 10-4. Cal State LA completed its scoring with single runs in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Martinez, in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Welker and in the ninth on a run-scoring single by
Lawrence Dominguez.
Cal State LA will continue its series with Cal Poly Pomona with a home game at Reeder Field on Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
