Golden Eagles Fall Twice In Final At Bats

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw rallies in both games of Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader get erased by walk-off celebrations for the home team.

The Golden Eagles wiped out a 7-3 eighth-inning deficit in the opener only to fall 8-7 in 10 innings to San Francisco State and then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning of the nightcap, only to fall 3-2 when the Gators scored twice in the ninth to complete the sweep. Cal State LA (6-20, 5-10 CCAA) has lost nine games by one run already this season.

Dakota Hernandez went 3-for-4 in the nightcap and scored the tying run in the eighth inning, while Isaac Dominguez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener and had the go-ahead RBI in the nightcap.

Daniel Diaz had a spectacular outing in the nightcap, alloowing only six hits and an unearned run in eight outstanding innings. He was in line for the victory before San Francisco State struck for two runs in the ninth.

San Francisco State (11-12, 5-8 CCAA) got seven shutout innings in the nightcap from Ulices Moreno and took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Cal State LA bunched together three hits in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead. Hernandez tripled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Christian Broussard, Jr. After Paul Martinez singled, Dominguez singled in Broussard to give the Golden Eagles the lead.

The Gators got four hits, including a clutch bunt single that loaded the bases, and a walk to score twice in the ninth and complete the sweep.

Cal State LA rallied from four runs down in the opener and ultimately sent the game into extra innings. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Martinez, but the Gators struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Eagles tied it with a pair of runs in the second. Christopher Flores had a run-scoring double and scored on a single by Ryan Welker.

San Francisco State, though, regained the lead with two runs in the third and took a 7-3 lead with two more runs in the fifth.

Cal State LA got four runs in the eighth to tie it. Martinez doubled to lead off the inning and took third on a single by Broussard. After a walk to Dominguez loaded the bases, Angel Sanchez singled in a run to make it 7-4. Run-scoring groundouts by Ryan Dixon and Flores closed the gap to 7-6 and a two-out single by Hernandez tied it. The Golden Eagles left two baserunners on in the ninth and were retired in order in the 10th before San Francisco State got a two-out game-winning single by Nick Jackson.

Brandon Zavala allowed four hits and two runs over 4 1/3 innings of relief and Gabriel Gentner allowed two hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings.

Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series at San Francisco State with a single game on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
