TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's baseball team endured a long day at Warrior Baseball Field on Saturday and was unable to pick up a win.
The Golden Eagles fell short in both games to Stanislaus State, dropping 12-4 and 4-3 decisions in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State LA (6-15, 5-5 CCAA) has dropped three straight games after taking two of the first three games of a series against UC San Diego last week. The Golden Eagles committed four errors in a shaky opening game and then fell victim to a pair of home runs in the nightcap against Stanislaus State (11-7, 4-4 CCAA).
Cal State LA got a three-run triple in the third inning of the opener from
Ryan Welker to tie the game at 4-4, but Stanislaus State got a pair of home runs from Michael Chavarria and scored the final eight runs of the game. Chavarria hit a two-run home run as part of a four-run fourth inning and hit a three-run home run as part of a four-run eighth inning for the Warriors. He wound up with six runs batted in for the game.
Christian Broussard, Jr. allowed six hits and eight runs over five innings, although only five of the runs were earned. He walked three and struck out seven.
Jesus Farias allowed four runs - all unearned - over two innings and
Jordan Cavazos tossed one scoreless inning.
Welker was 1-for-3 with the three RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaac Dominguez was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Angel Sanchez was 3-for-3 with one run scored, while
Armett Johnson and
Nick Osuna scored runs for Cal State LA.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 3-0 lead in the nightcap, only to see Stanislaus State scored once in the bottom of the fourth and twice in the fifth to tie it. The Warriors then got a leadoff home run in the eighth inning from Erik Colombini to take the lead for good. The Golden Eagles put two on with two out in the ninth, but couldn't push across the tying run.
Mitchell Moore allowed four hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings while walking three and striking out two.
Justin Davis allowed only two hits and one run over the final 3 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles.
Johnson singled to lead off the game, stole second, took third on a groundout by
Dakota Hernandez and scored on a groundout by Welker to give the Golden Eagles a quick 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring groundout by Broussard and a wild pitch that scored Welker.
Stanislaus State, though, got one run back on a solo home run by Nick Molina in the bottom of the fourth and tied it with two runs in the fifth. The tying run scored on a wild pitch and, after a walk, Moore was replaced by Davis, who got out of the inning without further damage.
The key sequence in the game came in the eighth.
Nathan Navarrete walked and stole second with two outs in the top of the inning, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a single by Broussard. The Warriors then got the leadoff home run from Colombini in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Sanchez and
Isaac Dominguez were hit by pitches with two out in the top of the ninth, but Micah Hall got the final out to pick up the win. He didn't allow a run over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series at Stanislaus State, weather permitting, on Sunday.
