LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team certainly had its chances at a second straight win over California Baptist, but instead dropped a tough 5-4 decision in 11 innings.
The Golden Eagles, in their 2016 home opener, stranded 14 runners and fell short when the Lancers pushed across a run in the top of the 11th to break a 4-4 tie. Cal State LA (1-1) rallied twice from two-run deficits and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Mitchell Moore had a strong start for the Golden Eagles and allowed only six hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings while walking three and striking out six. California Baptist starter Jeremy McDonald was also good, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up nine hits and two runs while walking two and striking out eight.
Patrick Gonzales pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win, while Justin Montgomery worked around a leadoff walk to get the save.
Ryan Dixon got the hard-luck loss after a bloop single to start the top of the 11th inning was ultimately cashed in by the Lancers for the winning run.
Daniel Diaz also pitched three innings of relief for the Golden Eagles and allowed three hits and one earned run.
Ryan Welker and
Angel Sanchez had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
Nathan Navarrete,
Trevor Meleski and
Isaac Dominguez drove in runs.
Brian Ruhm had two hits and two RBI for California Baptist. The Lancers had 12 hits to 10 for the Golden Eagles and 21 of the 22 hits were singles.
Ruhm's two-run single staked the Lancers to a 2-0 in the third, but Moore didn't allow another run and allowed the Golden Eagles to climb back into the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Cal State LA scored once in the fourth inning.
Armett Johnson singled with one out and took second on a single by
Anthony Moreno. Johnson was thrown out at home after a single by Sanchez, but Dominguez followed with a single to drive in Moreno to make it 2-1.
Cal State LA tied it in the fiffth. Christian Broussard singled and took second when
Dakota Hernandez reached on an error. Meleski then tied the game with a solid single to left.
California Baptist regained the lead with two runs in the seventh. DJ Porter had a pinch-hit, run-scoring double to break the tie and the second run scored on an error.
Cal State LA, though, battled back to tie the game in the eighth. The inning started on a scary note when Sanchez was hit in the helmet by a pitch with one out. He walked off under his own power and was replaced by
Nick Osuna. Dominguez followed with a walk and Navarrete singled in Osuna to make it 4-3. Welker popped up a bunt, but an ill-advised throw to first bounced away, allowing Dominguez to race home with the tying run.
The winning run came after Lohr blooped a single into right, took second on a sacrifice by Zack Norris, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Tyler Johnson.
Broussard walked to lead off the bottom of the 11th, but the Golden Eagles were unable to advance pinch-runner
Jordan Cavazos.
Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series with California Baptist in Riverside on Saturday at noon.
