Golden Eagles Drop Series Finale To Lancers

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's baseball team got another outstanding outing from a starting pitcher on Saturday, but couldn't muster any offense in its series finale at California Baptst.

Christian Broussard, Jr. allowed only one unearned run over seven masterful innings, but the Golden Eagles came out on the short end of a 2-0 decision at Totman Stadium. Cal State LA (1-2), after winning the opening game of the series, 8-2, dropped the final two by scores of 5-4 in 11 innings and 2-0.

Broussard was outstanding in his first start for Cal State LA. He allowed only four hits in his seven-inning stint and didn't walk a batter while striking out six. California Baptist, though, also got a strong start from Dylan Stowell, who blanked the Golden Eagles on four hits through seven innings. Travis Booth worked the final two innings for the Lancers to record the save.

Justin Davis had two hits for the Golden Eagles, while Ryan Welker, Isaac Dominguez and Paul Martinez each had one hit. Martinez also drew a pair of walks.

Broussard followed strong starts by Ralph Ramirez and Mitchell Moore. Cal State LA's three starters in the series combined to allow only three earned runs in 20 1/3 innings.

The first run of the game was manufactured by the opportunistic Lancers in the sixth inning. Zack Norris struck out, but reached first on a throwing error. He was sacrificed to second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Antonio Chavarria.

The Golden Eagles had a good chance to take the lead in the seventh inning after Martinez and Davis had to back-to-back one-out singles. They moved to second and third on a grounder by Anthony Moreno and were stranded when Angel Sanchez lined out to right to end the threat.

Brandon Zavala worked the eighth inning for the Golden Eagles and gave up two hits and one run. He retired the first two batters, but Norris collected a two-out single and scored on a double by Andrew Montoya.
