LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team will try to qualify for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament on Thursday night in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles will host Stanislaus State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and can clinch a spot in the tournament with a victory. Cal State LA (8-17, 7-11 CCAA) currently leads Stanislaus State (7-16, 6-12 CCAA) by one game with two games remaining in the race for the eighth spot. The top eight teams will qualify for the conference tournament. The first round will be held on campus sites of the top four seeds on Tuesday, March 1 and the semi-finals and finals will be held at the Stockton Arena. The winner of the conference tournament gets the CCAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The stakes are large in Thursday's game. If the Golden Eagles win, they are in the tournament. If they lose, Stanislaus State moves into a tie for eighth and would then hold the tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles. In that case, the Golden Eagles would then need to win on Saturday at home against conference-leading Chico State and have Stanislaus State lose at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles enter this week with five wins in their last six games, including a 69-56 victory at Cal State East Bay last Saturday in Hayward.
Jonathan Davis had his best game of the season with 17 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
Andre McPhail had 10 points and eight rebounds,
Dushon Carter had 10 points and
Joshua Munzon and
Duce Zaid had nine points each.
Cal State LA started its recent run with wins over San Francisco State, two over Cal State Dominguez Hills and a big road win at Cal State San Marcos, which is in fourth place in the conference, but ineligible for postseason play in its first year in the conference.
Stanislaus State also comes into Thursday's game with some momentum after impressive home wins over Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona.
Duce Zaid leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with a 13.7 points per game average, while
Joshua Munzon is averaging 12.9 points per game. Zaid leads the team with 4.5 rebounds per game, while
Geoffrey Frid averages 4.4 rebounds per game to go along with 5.8 points per contest.
Cal State LA will honor its six seniors -
Duce Zaid,
Joshua Munzon,
Dushon Carter,
Andre McPhail,
Collin Johnson and
Joel Brokenbrough - in pregame ceremonies on Saturday.
