LOS ANGELES – It took awhile, but Cal State L.A.'s baseball team finally secured a victory in its series finale against Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles held a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday when rain forced the game to be continued on Sunday and Cal State L.A. ultimately prevailed in a wild 16-9 decision over Cal State San Bernardino at Reeder Field. The teams combined for 16 runs in the seventh and eighth innings on Sunday.
Cal State L.A. (26-18, 21-15 CCAA) took three of four games from Cal State San Bernardino (10-35, 8-28 CCAA) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
Ralph Ramirez went six innings for the Golden Eagles and gave up eight hits and three runs to pick up the win and improve to 7-4. Brian Conley pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Coyotes and gave up six hits and six runs and took the loss.
The Golden Eagles had gotten their lead on Saturday largely from a pair of home runs, a grand slam by
Jesus Cuevas in the second inning and a solo shot from
Kyle Peralta in the third.
Jake Jelmini added a third home run for the Golden Eagles, slugging a three-run home run as part of a five-run eighth inning on Sunday. Those runs came in handy since Cal State San Bernardino scored six times in the eighth inning to counter a five-run seventh inning by the Golden Eagles and pull to within 11-9.
Chris Oropesa pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to preserve the win for the Golden Eagles.
Trent Zaks and
Ryan Welker scored three runs each for the Golden Eagles, while Cuevas was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. Peralta wound up 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBI.
Paul Martinez was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Aaron Owen was 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Coyotes, while Trevor Williams was 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Damion Edwards, Owen and Jose Hernandez had two RBI each for the Coyotes.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with the opener of an important four-game series against UC San Diego at 6 p.m.
