LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team overcame a tough start in doubles with a sensational performance in the singles competition in a big NCAA Division II West Region win over UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 22nd in the nation, won five of the six singles matches to erase a 2-1 deficit after singles and beat No. 17 UC San Diego, 6-3, Sunday in La Jolla. Cal State L.A. (9-8) split its season series with former conference rival UC San Diego (12-12). The Golden Eagles lost to the Tritons, 6-3, earlier this season in Los Angeles.
Cal State L.A. earned one point in doubles thanks to a hard-fought win at No. 2 doubles from
Alexandra Makashov and
Iris Raileanu, who edged Nava Nowamooz and Shannon Theisen, 8-6.
The Golden Eagles, then needing to take four singles contests to win the match, did even better by winning five of the six.
Nozomi Matsuoka beat Jasmine Hosseini, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles,
Elizaveta Sokolova beat Nava Nowamooz, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, Raileanu rallied to beat Nousha Nowamooz, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the lone three-set battle of the day at No. 4 singles, Makashov beat Theisen, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles and
Victoria Vo beat Monica Yassear, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
The match on Sunday concluded the Golden Eagles' regular season.
Cal State L.A. will now turn its attention to its first-ever Pacific West Conference championships that begin on Thursday in Arizona.
