TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team used some late-game dramatics to win the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus, but the Warriors evened the score in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles got a go-ahead two-run double from
Dakota Hernandez in the top of the ninth inning to win the opener, 6-4, but left the bases loaded in a pivitol sixth inning of an 8-4 loss in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (23-12, 18-9 CCAA) was unable to erase a 5-4 deficit in the sixth inning of the second game and Cal State Stanislaus (16-20, 11-15 CCAA) scored three times in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.
The Golden Eagles remain in a second-place tie with Cal Poly Pomona.
Hernandez had a big game in the opener, collecting four hits in five at bats with one run scored and the big two-run double in the ninth.
Rodrigo Martinez was 2-for-3 with one RBI,
Jesus Cuevas was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and
Kyle Peralta was 1-for-1 with four walks and two runs scored.
Hernandez' big double in the ninth inning made a winner of
Icezack Flemming, who worked eight strong innings to improve to 7-2. He allowed 10 hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out seven. After the Golden Eagles took the 6-4 lead,
Marcos Casillas came on and tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Trevor Meleski gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a run-scoring single to score Peralta, but the Warriors tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball. Cal State L.A. took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning when a grounder by
Lawrence Dominguez was thrown away, allowing Hernandez and Peralta to score. A sacrifice fly by Cal State Stanislaus' Scott Stetson in the fifth made it 3-2.
Cal State L.A. increased its lead to 4-2 in the eighth on a run-scoring single by
Rodrigo Martinez, but Cal State Stanislaus tied it in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring double by Stevie Robinson and a sacrifice fly by Michael Chavarria.
The Golden Eagles mounted a two-out rally in the top of the ninth to win it.
Ryan Welker started the rally with a walk, Cuevas followed with a single and Peralta drew a walk to load the bases. Hernandez then doubled to left-center to give Cal State L.A. the lead.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth, only to see Cal State Stanislaus score three in the bottom of the inning and three more in the sixth to win.
Rodrigo Martinez was 2-for-4 with one run scored, while
Jake Jelmini was 2-for-2 with one RBI and Cuevas was 2-for-4.
The Warriors scored twice in the first inning off Cal State L.A. starter
Ralph Ramirez, bunching together four hits from the first four hitters on the game.
Jelmini made it 2-1 with a run-scoring single in the second and the Golden Eagles tied it later in the inning on a double-play grounder by
Nick Osuna.
Rodrigo Martinez scored on a wild pitch to give the Golden Eagles their 3-2 lead in the fourth, but a two-run single by Nick Molina broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the inning and gave the Warriors the lead for good. Molina had a two-run double as part of Cal State Stanislaus' three-run rally in the sixth.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the four-game series at Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday at noon.
