LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team recorded its second straight victory over a nationally-ranked team Sunday at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Complex.
The No. 23 Golden Eagles won two of the three doubles contests and all six singles to post an 8-1 win over No. 25 Sonoma State on Sunday in a PacWest Conference match. Cal State L.A. (4-4) had beaten No. 22 Point Loma on Wednesday.
Cal State L.A. got wins at No. 1 doubles, where
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Sonia Landeros beat Leire Martinez and Jacquelyn Ward, 8-6, and at No. 3 doubles, where
Victoria Vo and
Elizaveta Sokolova defeated Hillary Fazekas and Karlee Budge, 8-4.
The Golden Eagles then clinched the victory with three straight-set singles wins. Matsuoka beat Martinez at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, Sokolova beat Jordyn Kearney, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Vo beat Ward at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Cal State L.A. then swept the remaining singles matches in third-set tiebreakers. Landeros rallied to beat Haithcock, 6-7, 6-3, (10-7) at No. 2 singles, Raileanu rallied to beat Budge at No. 4 singles, 5-7, 6-1, (10-1) and Makashov beat Fazekas, 6-2, 4-6, (10-4) at No. 6 singles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Division I Seton Hall at 1:30 p.m.
