Golden Eagles Drop Both Ends Of Doubleheader

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team endured a long and unproductive day at the ballpark on Friday.

The Golden Eagles dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Cal State Dominguez Hills at Reeder Field by scores of 6-4 and 8-0. Cal State L.A. (12-6, 7-4 CCAA) was unable to duplicate its effort from its series-opening win on Thursday in Carson.

The Golden Eagles never led during the doubleheader and fell behind 3-0 after one inning in the opener and 4-0 after three innings of the nightcap.

Cal State L.A. collected 10 hits in the opener, but left 11 runners on base and struggled with runners in scoring position. In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles managed only four hits off Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Kevin Brown.

Bryan Conant pitched the opener and allowed nine hits and four earned runs over seven innings. Greg Humbert allowed only one run over the final two innings.

Ryan Welker had three hits and Trent Zaks had a pair of runs batted in for the Golden Eagles in the first game. Trevor Meleski and David Trejo had two hits each and scored a run.

Kamran Young had three hits for the Toros (11-8, 6-5 CCAA), while Brady Conlan, Fernando Gallegos and Adrian Guzman had two hits each. Cal State Dominguez Hills had 12 hits in the game.

Winston Lavendier went six innings and allowed seven hits and three runs to pick up the win for the Toro, while TyRay Gatewood allowed only an unearned run over three innings to pick up the save.

After falling behind 4-0, the Golden Eagles got a run in the third on a run-scoring single by Welker and two more in the fourth on a two-run double by Zaks.

The Toros added a run in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Daryl Donerson and another in the ninth on a triple by Young to make it 6-3. The Golden Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the ninth on a run-scoring single by Anthony Lombardo and had two runners left on base when Gatewood got the final out.

While the Golden Eagles had their scoring chances in the first game, they did little in the nightcap, managing only four hits, three of them singles. Zaks had a double for the only extra base hit.

Ralph Ramirez went 4 1/3 innings and gave up 11 hits and five earned runs. James Mendez pitched well, allowing only one hit over 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Kevin Lenik went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Toros, while Brandon Polizzi had three hits and Daniel Matienzo scored a pair of runs and drove in one. Brown allowed only four hits and walked just one while striking out seven.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the series with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday with a single game in Carson starting at 2 p.m.
