CARSON – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State Dominguez Hills off to a good start.
The Golden Eagles got strong pitching from
Brandon Quintero and
Reed Reznicek and collected 10 hits in a 6-2 win over the Toros Thursday afternoon at Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (12-4, 7-2 CCAA) carried a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning, but added four more runs on a leadoff home run by
Anthony Lombardo and a three-run triple by
Rodrigo Martinez.
Quintero worked 7 1/3 innings and gave up four hits and just an unearned run. He walked one and struck out eight before turning things over to Reznicek in the eighth. Reznicek got the final five outs for the save.
Fernando Gallegos allowed seven hits and three runs over eight innings for Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-8, 4-5 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first when
Jesus Cuevas delivered a two-out single to drive in
Rodrigo Martinez, who had doubled with one out.
The Toros tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the third after cashing in on a Cal State L.A. error when Brady Conlan doubled home Kamran Young with two out.
Cal State L.A. took the lead at 2-1 in the sixth when Lombardo doubled to drive in
Nick Osuna, who had drawn a two-out.
Quintero worked his way out of bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth with an inning-ending double-play grounder and retired the side in order in the seventh. He left after getting the first out in the eighth.
The Golden Eagles stretched their lead with four runs in the ninth. Lombardo opened the inning with a home run to right.
David Trejo drew a one-out walk and
Trent Zaks and
Kyle Peralta picked up singles to load the bases.
Rodrigo Martinez then cleared the bases with a triple to left-center to make it 6-1.
Reznicek then finished up by getting the final three outs in the ninth to preserve the win for Quintero, who improved to 3-1 on the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 11 a.m.
