LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team won a marathon battle with Point Loma Wednesday and that's probably an understatement.
The Golden Eagles survived a five-hour match between nationally-ranked teams and beat the Sea Lions, 6-3 at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Complex. No. 23 Cal State L.A. (3-4) was able to avenge an earlier 6-3 loss to No. 22 Point Loma in San Diego. The Golden Eagles won two of the three tightly-contested doubles matches and then took four of six singles contests.
The match-clinching point was earned at No. 6 singles, where Cal State L.A.'s
Alexandra Makashov rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Kirsty Mountain. The final match to conclude was a brilliant contest at No. 4 singles, where Cal State L.A.'s
Elizaveta Sokolova outlasted Point Loma's Preethika Venugopal, 6-4, 6-7, 10-3. The Golden Eagles got another big point at No. 5 singles, where
Victoria Vo beat Hilary Ramage, 6-1, 7-5.
Cal State L.A.'s
Nozomi Matsuoka beat Madeline Cunningham, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
Three of the six singles matches went to three sets.
All three doubles contests were close with Point Loma's Ramage and Nikki Newell pulling out a 9-8 win over Cal State L.A.'s
Sonia Landeros and
Iris Raileanu. The Golden Eagles won at No. 2 doubles, where Matsuoka and Makashov beat Regina von Koch and Preethika Venugopal, 8-6 and at No. 3 doubles, where Vo and Sokolova rallied from 4-0 down to beat Cunningham and Jen Weissman, 8-6.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a match against No. 25 Sonoma State.
