LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team battled well, but came up short against a Division I program Saturday.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 23 in the NCAA Division II, had several close calls in a 7-2 loss to Colorado State Saturday at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (5-6) saw two of the three doubles matches go to a tiebreaker, while two of the six singles matches also went to extra play. The Golden Eagles split those four matches.
The Golden Eagles picked up one point after three tightly-contested doubles contests.
Victoria Vo and
Elizaveta Sokolova won at No. 3 doubles, beating Maddie Buxton and Laia Hernandez, 9-8 and 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Sonia Landeros came out on the short end of a 9-8 decision at No. 1 doubles, where Colorado State's Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska prevailed.
Iris Raileanu and
Alexandra Makashov lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, to Colorado State's Aina Hernandez and Madison Porter.
Sokolova picked up Cal State L.A.'s lone singles point, outlasting Laia Hernandez, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 in a three-set match that went to a tiebreaker. Makashov also carried her match into a tiebreaker at No. 6 singles before falling, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 to Madison Porter.
Matsuoka lost at No. 1 singles to Heffron, 6-4, 6-1, Landeros lost to Wojakowska at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-1, Raileanu lost at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4, to Aina Hernandez and Vo lost to Buxton at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Colorado State won its second straight match and improved to 6-7 on the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to NCAA Division II competition on Tuesday with a regional match at Cal State Stanislaus.
