LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's team had a rough afternoon against one of the best NCAA Division II teams in the country.
The No. 23 Golden Eagles were blanked, 9-0, by No. 6 Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in a regional match at UC San Diego. Cal State L.A. (5-5) saw a three-match winning streak come to an end, while Hawaii Pacific improved to 12-2 with its third win in two days against nationally-ranked teams.
The Golden Eagles lost all three doubles matches by scores of 8-3 and then lost all six singles contests despite two of the six going to three sets and two other being extremely competitive.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Sonia Landeros lost at No. 1 doubles to Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski,
Iris Raileanu and
Alexandra Makashov lost at No. 2 doubles to Lorena Gheorghe and Lea Kruse-Utermann and
Victoria Vo and
Elizaveta Sokolova fell to Vivian Hansen and Julia Sauer.
Sokolova and Makashov both took their matches to three sets. Sokolova lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Hansen, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, at No. 3 singles, and Makashov lost to Sofia Tavitian at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Matsuoka lost at No. 1 singles to Hancarova, 6-3, 6-3, Landeros lost to Hoynaski, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, Raileanu lost to Gheorghe, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, and Vo lost to Kruse-Utermann, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5 singles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Saturday, March 21, in a home match against Division I Colorado State at 11 a.m.
