Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against Lancers

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to put back-to-back solid performances together and fell to California Baptist Friday night in Riverside.

The Golden Eagles surrendered 15 hits and committed five errors in a 7-3 loss to the Lancers at Totman Stadium. Cal State L.A. (1-1) fell behind 5-2 after three innings and never could recover. California Baptist (1-1) had three errors, but a 15-hit offensive attack more than made up for it. The Golden Eagles had won the opener of the three-game series on Thursday in Los Angeles, 8-2.

Bryan Conant started for the Golden Eagles and gave up 10 hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings, although only two of the runs were earned. Greg Humbert went the final 4 2/3 innings and gave up five hits and two runs, both unearned. Five of the seven runs allowed by the Golden Eagles on Friday were unearned.

Jeremy McDonald allowed five hits and three runs - one earned - over five innings to get the win for California Baptist. Stephen Carabajal blanked the Golden Eagles on two hits over the final four innings to pick up the save.

Kyle Peralta had three hits in the leadoff spot for the Golden Eagles, while Jake Jelmini had two hits. Nick Osuna and Ryan Welker had one RBI each for Cal State L.A.

Antonio Chavarria went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Lancers, while Nathan Antoun was 2-for-4, including a home run.

Peralta scored the first run of the game in the top of the first for Cal State L.A. when he drew a walk and eventually scored when Osuna reached on a two-out error. The Lancers, though, scored twice in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out error and a wild pitch.

Cal State L.A. cut the deficit  to 3-2 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Osuna, but the Lancers countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two on Antoun's home run and the other on a run-scoring single by Luke Navigato.

The Golden Eagles got their final run in the fourth to make it 5-3. Trent Zaks reached on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Welker.

The Lancers completed the scoring with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

The teams will conclude the three-game series on Saturday at Cal State L.A.'s Reeder Field at 1 p.m.
