LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team battled on a cool, windy Saturday against No. 15 UC San Diego, but ultimately came up short in a competitive match.
The Golden Eagles dropped two of the three doubles contests and managed two wins in singles in a 6-3 loss to the Tritons at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (2-4) is ranked 23
rd in the nation and dropped its second straight match to an opponent ranked higher nationally. On Wednesday, Cal State L.A. lost to No. 4 BYU-Hawaii.
Cal State L.A. picked up one point in doubles where the No. 2 team of
Sonia Landeros and
Iris Raileanu played well in an 8-1 win over UC San Diego's Nava Nowamooz and Shannon Theisen.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Alexandra Makashov lost at No. 1 doubles to Kyra Scott and Britta Mosser, 8-5, and
Victoria Vo and
Elizaveta Sokolova lost at No. 3 dobules to Nousha Nowamooz and Jasmine Hosseini, 8-3.
Sokolova and Vo, though, bounced back nicely with well-played singles win. Sokolova beat Nava Nowamooz, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles and Vo beat Theisen at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
In the closest match of the day, Raileanu, in just her second dual match of the season, lost in three sets to Mosser, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Matsuoka lost at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, to Scott and Makashov lost at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-5, to Nousha Nowamooz.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday, March 4, with a home match against Point Loma at 2 p.m.
