LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team found the going tough against the No. 4 team in the NCAA Division II.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 23
rd in the nation, fought hard, but came up short in a 9-0 loss to powerhouse BYU-Hawaii Wednesday at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (2-3) is ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Division II West Region, while BYU-Hawaii (10-0) is ranked No. 1.
The Golden Eagles fell into an early hole after losing all three doubles contests.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Alexandra Makashov lost to BYU-Hawaii's Min Liu and Nanna Zhang, 8-3,
Sonia Landeros and
Iris Raileanu fell at No. 2 doubles to Marietta Tuionetoa and Jin Jin Han, 8-2 and
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Victoria Vo fell to Jade Griffin and Chiung-En, 8-3.
Matsuoka lost at No. 1 singles to Zhang, 6-3, 6-0, Landeros lost at No. 2 singles to Liu, 6-1, 6-2, Raileanu lost to Tuionetoa lost at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, Sokolova lost to Jeong-Min Jeon, 6-2, 6-2, Makashov lost to Han at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1 and in the tightest match of the day, Vo fell to Griffin at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match against No. 15 UC San Diego beginning at 11 a.m.
