Box ScoreNORTHRIDGE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team got to enjoy some healthy leads in its second exhibition game of the season.
In the end, though, Cal State Northridge came up with the big plays down the stretch to edge the Golden Eagles, 54-50, Thursday night in Northridge. Cal State LA led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but the Matadors rallied and held the Golden Eagles without a basket over the final four minutes of the exhibition contest.
Duce Zaid scored 14 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Joshua Munzon had 11 points and nine steals.
Bobby Miles had five points for Cal State LA.
Tavrion Dawson had a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double for CSUN, while Michael Warren had 12 points. CSUN used only six players in the game.
Cal State LA shot just 35.6 percent from the floor (21-of-59) and made only 4-of-20 from 3-point range. CSUN shot 46.3 percent overall (19-of-41) and made only 2-of-11 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was just 4-of-10 from the free-throw line, while CSUN was 14-of-22.
The Golden Eagles, led by Munzon's nine, had 16 steals while forcing CSUN into 22 turnovers. Cal State LA had 14 turnovers.
CSUN had a 37-31 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first four points of the game, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Zaid and Miles erased the deficit. Cal State LA took its first lead at 10-8 after a basket from
Geoffrey Frid. CSUN led by as many as five points in the first half, but a layup by
Collin Johnson got the Golden Eagles even at 23-28 and a basket from
Tahron Morrison with an assist from
Dushon Carter and a 3-pointer by Zaid gave the Golden Eagles a 28-23 halftime lead.
Munzon opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a layup by Morrison gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 37-26, with 16 minutes to go.
A free throw by Munzon kept the lead at 45-40 before CSUN used a 10-0 run to take a 50-45 lead. Cal State LA, though, battled back with baskets from
Joel Brokenbrough and Zaid and a steal and lapup by Munzon to take a 46-45 lead with 5:46 to play. The Golden Eagles got their last basket of the game on a shot by
Andre McPhail that gave Cal State LA a 48-47 lead with four minutes to go. Two free throws by Munzon gave the Golden Eagles a 50-49 lead with 1:58 to go, but the Golden Eagles came up empty down the stretch.
Cal State LA will play its third and final exhibition against a Division I team when the Golden Eagles travel to meet North Carolina State on Sunday.
