LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s nationally-ranked men's soccer team saw its offense sputter on Friday for the first time this season, but the Golden Eagles were able to rely on a defensive effort that was top-notch.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 9 in the nation, got a first-half goal from
Sigifredo Torres and that was all they needed in a 1-0 victory over Point Loma at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (3-0) had scored 11 goals in its first two victories, including eight in its last start, but the Golden Eagles never got untracked on Friday against a stout Point Loma defense.
Neither team managed much pressure in the defensive struggle. There were only 12 shots in the game and only three on net. Cal State L.A. limited Point Loma (0-2-1) to only four shots, none of which were on target.
After taking the lead on a free kick by Torres just outside the penalty box in the 26
th minute, the Golden Eagles were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Mike Beigarten recorded his second shutout of the season without making a save. He was strong when called upon, though, on the few occasions when Point Loma threatened in the box.
Cal State L.A. had all three corner kicks in the game.
Arvin Yakou made two saves in goal for the Sea Lions. Daniel ten Bosch had a pair of shots.
Torres had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Abel Teferi,
Troy Dumlao,
Shane Panther,
Herbert Biste and
Marvin Iskra each had one.
The only goal of the game came after a Point Loma foul just outside the box. Torres drilled a low shot into the net for his second goal of the season and that was that.
Cal State L.A. only took two shots in the opening half, but outshot the Sea Lions, 6-1, in the second half.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a non-conference home game against California Collegiate Athletic Association counterpart Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 11:30 a.m.
