Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 9 Golden Eagles Drop First Game In Overtime

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s nationally-ranked men's soccer team faced adversity for the first time this season and the end result was a dramatic defeat.

The Golden Eagles saw Cal Poly Pomona get the game-winner just 2:18 into overtime on a perfectly-placed cross and lightning-quick finish in a 1-0 loss at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (3-1), ranked No. 9 in the country, lost for the first time this season after beating its first three opponents by a combined score of 12-1.

The game-winning goal was eerily reminiscent of Simon Fraser's game-winning goal in double overtime in the NCAA Division II playoffs last season. Although the stakes were not the same in Sunday's non-conference match between California Collegiate Athletic Association foes, the score did come at the same end of the field.

At least this time, the Golden Eagles still have nearly a full schedule of games ahead of them.

Alexander Turkson scored the game-winner for Cal Poly Pomona (2-0-1) when he knocked in a cross from Daniel Garcia Jr. from point-blank range into the net, setting off a Bronco celebration on the field.

Cal Poly Pomona came out with confidence and dictated play for most of the first half. The Broncos had 10 corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes and only a diving save by Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Mike Beigarten of a shot by Adi Azran in the 38th minute and a clearance off the line by a Cal State L.A. defender kept the game scoreless at halftime.

The Broncos had a 7-2 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks in the opening half.

Cal State L.A. finally got things turned around in the second half and had the better chances during the second 45 minutes. Sigifredo Torres had two excellent opportunities early in the half. First, Andre Bissmark took a hard shot that was deflected by Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Fernando Pablo Quevedo and Torres sent the rebound just wide.

A few minutes later, Torres was able to flip a shot over an onrushing Pablo Quevedo, but the shot toward an empty net sailed just wide.

Herbert Biste had a later attempt knocked out of play by a Cal Poly Pomona defender and resulted in a corner kick and Marvin Iskra had a good look that was stopped by Pablo Quevedo late in the half.

Cal State L.A. had a 9-2 edge in shots in the second period.

The Golden Eagles pressured to open the overtime period, but the Broncos weathered it and soon thereafter found themselves with a big road win.

Cal State L.A. had a 12-11 edge in shots, while Cal Poly Pomona had a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks. Beigarten made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Pablo Quevedo had seven for the Broncos.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Saturday night with another non-conference home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 7 p.m.
