Golden Eagles Enjoy A Festive 2014 Home Opener

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team made its home opener an enjoyable one Thursday night at Jesse Owens Track.

The Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals in each half and beat Dixie State, 4-0, in an NCAA Division II West Region matchup. Cal State L.A. (3-0) posted its second shutout in its first three games while handing Dixie State (1-1-1) its first loss of the season.

Cal State L.A. had a 21-7 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles scored their first goal just five minutes into the match and never let up against one of the PacWest Conference's top teams.

Andrea Lammers, Amalia Arvidsson, Joanna Espinoza and Sahar Arghandiwal had goals for the Golden Eagles. Yi Du made four saves to post her second shutout of the season. Her best save came on a diving stop midway through the second half.

Dixie State split its goalkeeping duties with Stacie Gubier getting the start and allowing two goals with four saves in the opening half. Danica Nusick had the same exact line in the second half, including a pair of spectacular stops to keep her team in the game.

Cal State L.A. took control with a well-played first half. The Golden Eagles had an 11-3 advantage in shots in the opening half and had the only six corner kicks of the first period.

Lammers opened the scoring in the fifth minute when she knocked home a shot from close-range. Krystal Kutscher picked up the assist.

Arvidsson made it 2-0 in the 40th minute after a nice cross from Arghandiwal. Arvidsson was able to head the ball into the corner of the goal for her second goal of the season.

That's how the score remained until a second-half goal in the 60th minute from Espinoza made it 3-0. Veronika Steen picked up the assist after her corner kick sailed over a crowd in the box and an onrushing Espinoza pushed it into the net.

The final goal came in the 79th minute from Arghandiwal, who received a perfect through pass from Victoria Arredondo and fired a low shot in for her first goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with another important West Region game against Point Loma at 4 p.m.
